Maintaining a healthy diet is important for your body\u2019s overall health, reducing risk from many chronic noncommunicable diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. These are the best weight loss pills<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

In honor of National Nutrition Awareness Month, Amy Warriner, M.D., director of\u00a0UAB Weight Loss Medicine\u00a0and professor in the\u00a0University of Alabama at Birmingham\u00a0Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and Lizzy Davis, Ph.D., assistant professor with the UAB\u00a0Department of Nutrition Sciences, share their top five tips for maintaining a healthy diet.<\/p>\n

Choosing the right foods<\/h4>\n

It is important to choose foods for their nutrient content most of the time. Similarly, Warriner recommends choosing food for enjoyment only some of the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important to know what nutrients are in foods and how to work those foods into your daily diet,\u201d Warriner said. \u201cIf you do not know how to do this, talking with a registered dietitian can be very helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis says food is used more than just to sustain life \u2014 it is tied to culture, feelings, community, memories and more.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor these reasons, it should be enjoyed some of the time,\u201d Davis said. \u201cMost of the time, choose foods that are nutrient-dense, meaning they provide a lot of nutrients for each serving size.\u201d Try out this best testosterone booster<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cTypically, foods that are closer to their natural form are going to be nutrient-dense,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n

No food is bad food<\/h4>\n

There are no specific foods that you should or should not eat to be healthy.\u00a0Balance is necessary, and all is OK in moderation and with balance.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you are eating a diet full of healthy vegetables and lean proteins, eating a treat every now and again is not harmful,\u201d Warriner said. \u201cAlternatively, if you are eating fast food for most meals, adding a protein shake is not going to make you healthier.\u201d Visit phenq<\/a><\/em> website.<\/p>\n

Increase vegetable intake in your diet<\/h4>\n

Warriner says increasing the number of vegetables you eat is something most people struggle with. The recommended intake for vegetables is five to nine servings a day.\u00a0Davis says roughly 9 percent of adults meet intake recommendations for vegetables.<\/p>\n

\u201cTry sneaking this in for breakfast and snacks, as typically these are eating times people aren\u2019t consuming vegetables,\u201d Davis said. \u201cMix a variety of vegetables in with your eggs, throw some in your hash browns, or sneak some into your muffin or pancake batter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even if you are making healthy choices, you can eat too much of a good thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cServe up one serving size at a time,\u201d Davis said. \u201cWhen you have a stopping point \u2014 besides the bottom of the bag, you make your brain stop and ask, \u2018am I still hungry\u2019? You can always go back for more if you want to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do not give in to gimmicks<\/h4>\n

\u201cIf there were a miracle diet\/supplement\/vitamin, you wouldn\u2019t be learning about it from social media first,\u201d Warriner said.<\/p>\n

Instead, she recommends using your money to buy nutritious meals.<\/p>\n
